How buffered vitamin C powder works
Vitamin C is ascorbic acid, and on its own it tastes sharp. A buffered powder takes the edge off in one of two ways:
- Mineral ascorbates: vitamin C already bound to a mineral, such as calcium ascorbate or sodium ascorbate.
- Blends: ascorbic acid mixed with mineral salts that offset some of the acid.
Tangy Vitamin C uses both. The label describes the buffered formula as “designed to be gentle on the stomach and suitable for daily use.”

Buffered vitamin C powder without sodium ascorbate
There is no sodium ascorbate in the jar, so the vitamin C brings no added sodium. The buffering comes from calcium and magnesium.

How to read a buffered vitamin C label
1. Find the total vitamin C
Mineral ascorbates weigh more than the vitamin C they hold. Use the total or “equivalent to” line.
2. Find the buffer
Calcium, magnesium, sodium or potassium. Check the sodium if you watch your salt.
3. Price per serve
Compare cost per serve, not per jar. Ours is $0.20 to $0.25.
