Non Acidic Vitamin C
Non acidic vitamin C is a label term for vitamin C that has been buffered with minerals, because vitamin C itself, ascorbic acid, is an acid.

Is any vitamin C truly non acidic?
Close, but not quite. There are two kinds of product sold as non acidic vitamin C:
- Mineral ascorbates such as calcium ascorbate or sodium ascorbate. The acid has been paired with a mineral to make a salt, which is much milder.
- Buffered blends of ascorbic acid with minerals. Less acidic than plain ascorbic acid, not acid free.
So “non acidic” usually means “less acidic”. Read the ingredient list to see which kind you are buying.
Is Tangy Vitamin C non acidic?
No, and we do not call it that. It is a buffered blend: 800 mg of ascorbic acid with 200 mg of calcium ascorbate, magnesium phosphate and calcium phosphate. That is why it tastes tangy. The label describes the buffered formula as “designed to be gentle on the stomach and suitable for daily use.”

Non acidic vitamin C supplements: what to check
1. Which ascorbate
Calcium, sodium or magnesium. Sodium ascorbate adds a little over 110 mg of sodium per gram.
2. How much vitamin C you really get
Ascorbates carry less vitamin C per gram than ascorbic acid. 200 mg of calcium ascorbate dihydrate holds about 164 mg. See calcium ascorbate vitamin C.
3. Taste
The more acid a powder keeps, the sharper it tastes. Some people like the tang; some want it flat.
